2:31:16 PM | Since this is July marks 30 years of his passing away, I thought of opening a topic to discuss two points.
1) Was Uttam the biggest stars ever to grace any screen in India? I know many would point out Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bacchan or even SRK in this regard. But from what one hears about the hysterical fan-following Uttam Kumar had, maybe only the great Rajnikanth can be considered to be in the same league?
2)Would Uttam Kumar have been equally successful if he were to perform today? I know this is completely hypothetical....but why dont we have a good debate on this ? :) | |

2:51:10 PM | Unmatched screen-presence was Uttam's forte. With the exception of, may be, Big B and Amrish Puri, I doubt whether any other actor of the Indian silver screen can come close to him in that regard! :)
Though Uttam was exceptionally versatile in prtraying the character he was playing, the chink in his armour was action-roles, where Big B was undoubtedly ahead of him. But the likeness between the two was also in getting into the skin of the character they were asked to play whereas most other actors like Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Rajnikaanth or SRK brought their own mannerisms into the characters! :)
As for Uttam being equally successful today, it is a matter of conjecture and I would get to that part later! :) | |

I will never forget the year 1980 UK expired on 24th July . It was a same year my mom also expired on 11th July .
She was a die-hard fan of UK and I have grown up watching his movies ..and listening to the hysterical fan following you mentioned .
On point 2 I would like to make a point that , yes he would have been equally HIT if not more successful with his timeless versatility .
Btw . Amitabh Da..had opened a similar thread on UK if I remember ..but nevertheless , we can continue the discussion here as well | |

I do not compare apples with oranges... but just discussing the strengths and the weaknesses of the two. Uttam has a higher score vis-a-vis Soumitra in similar kind of roles. Even when sharing the screen, Uttam leads 2-1 (Debdas, Stree against Jhinder Bondi)! :)
