Today(29th July,2010) is a red letter day in Indian sports calendar.In 29th July,1911,ten bare footed players of Mohun Bagan went on to defeat renowned British side East Yorkshire Regiment by 2-1 to lift the shield.Shibdas Bhaduri & Abhilash Ghosh scored for the winners.That was the first ever win by an Indian team against their European counterparts on Asian soil.This win of Mohon Bagan even inspired & motivated the freedom fighters of India in a great extent too since India was under the British rule at that time.

The first President of India,Dr Rajendra Prasad once recalled back his memories of this historical win of Bagan while handing the Durand cup to the captain of the team,the legendary footballer, Sailen Manna.The president of India said to the captain of Mohon Bagan "I used to live in Hindu Hostel then.I could not still forget the elaborate victory procession which went thru College St after that victory of Mohon Bagan.The victory enhanced my pride & patriotism as an Indian."

Present Mohon Bagan club authorities & officials are starting a year long celebration prog of the historical shield win from today.Philately Dept of India is also bringing out a special first day cover to mark this very special occassion.I would like to request all members of Aspexs to share their views on this grand celebration.Please remember the simple fact that there were five players who were born in present Bangladesh in that dream eleven of Mohon Bagan who made history & made us proud.

The Mohun Bagan team for 1911 IFA Shield was-
1.Hiralal Mukherjee (Goal)
2.Bhuti Sukul (Right-back)
3.Sudhir Kumar Chatterjee (Left -back)
4.Manmohon Mukherjee (Right-half)
5.Rajendranath SenGupta (Center -half)
6.Nilmadhab Bhattacharya (Left-half)
7.Jatindranath Roy (Kanu) (Right-out)
8.Srischanda Sarkar (Habul) (Right-in)
9.Abhilas Ghosh (Centre-forward)
10.Bijaydas Bhaduri (Left-in)
11.Shibdas Bhaduri (Left-out)

Generations to come would remember this - it marked a turning point for country, and made the masses realise that if only they stood up, they could stand tall, shoulder-to-shoulder with the empire on which the sun never set!

No country in the world, has seen the likes of the green-and-maroon. And there will never be a team like it again!

Legend has it that during a victory march around town after the IFA Shield final in 1911, a fan pointed to the Union Jack fluttering atop Fort William and asked: “When will that come down?”

Someone from the crowd replied: “It will come down when Mohun Bagan wins another Shield.”

The club next bagged the Shield in 1947.

The feat inspired Achintya Kumar Sengupta to write in 'Kallol Jug':

“Mohun Bagan is not a football team. It is a tortured country, rolling in the dust, which has just started to raise its head.”

Mohun Bagan is not merely a football club. Consider this:

Within nine years of the IFA Shield win, India had sent a two-man Olympic team to the Antwerp Olympics.

One of them finished fourth in his 400 metres heats - Purnachandra Banerjee - whose home club was none other than Mohun Bagan.

THIS RECORD BY AN INDIAN OLYMPIAN FROM MOHUN BAGAN STOOD FOR 40 YEARS!

It would not be before 1960 that an Indian athlete would better this feat, when Milkha Singh finished second in his heats in the Rome Olympics.

@Joyjit

Interesting that you make a point of mentioning that five of the 1910 team were from today's Bangladesh.

Mohun Bagan has a fine tradition of attracting players from all over the sub-continent.

For instance, Abdul Hamid, who joined the team in 1935, and was the first to play with boots on, was from Quetta, which is in Pakistan today.

Mohun Bagan is not merely a club. It is an identity, a tradition and a heritage. To some, it is almost a religion.

I hereby raise my toast to the century old milestone event that changed the way football is played in India, forever.

Among the 3 big teams of Kolkata football, MOHUN BAGAN is the only team which does not have any regionalism or religionism in its name, it represents India as a whole. That is why MOHUN BAGAN is the National Team.

In fact Kazi Nazrul Islam was a supporter of Mohun Bagan and used to witness the matches of Mohun Bagan. Whenever Mohun Bagan scored a goal against any British team he used to say... DE GORUR GA DHUIYE

@Soumitra da

Well said! As an example of what you said, MB star, Vijayan, is from my family's ancestral seat in Kerala - Trichur.

Another interesting fact: Vijayan is the only footballer to have played for India and also to star in a film which won the National Award for Best Film (Shantham).

Football, film...the stars of Mohun Bagan shine bright!

Yes, in absolute agreement about the universality - some administrators had tunnel vision, though. But by and large the emblematic appeal transcended all barriers.

Mohun Bagan-er spirit ke anudhabon korar jonye it takes more than a lifetime. Tar theke shudhu khela dekhe haat-taali dewa onek easy. :)

Naru Da, amader sei adda ta baaki ache ekhono.

The typical proclivity of the Bengali psyche to gloat over some sunny moments of the past ( whether it be Gokhale's unfortunately parochial missive about Bengal and its thinking, or the century-old feat of outplaying a part-time amateur band of soldiers in the football field ) is laughably puerile!

But of course, Apurba Da. What else is there to thump our chests about?

"Those were the days...." is primeval. :)

Yes.

Though it has lost its crown as the finest naval force of the world decades ago, the Royal Navy is still proud of what it achieved at the Gravelines(1588) and at Waterloo(1815), not to mention the Jutland and the (in)famous blockade of WWI. And it doesn't take anything away from the Royal Navy, still the 'senior' among the British Services and the oldest Navy of the world! :)

Ah, yes!

But then, the Royal Navy is not yet relegated to merely being commercial trawlers for Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. :)

Suffice it to say that those Trident subs prowling the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans still instill some fear in nations coveting the isles of Malvinas and the rocks of Gibraltar.

What exactly has Mohun Bagan been upto these days other than to help sell Mohua and Begunbhaja for United Breweries ? :)

@apu !!
eto apriya satya gulo shob shomoi keno bolis !
kobey aamra ilish kheyechi ekhono tar gondho nebar jonye haat'er gondho shukte thaki !!!

But try to see this in perspective

Bengal been divided ... capital being shifted from Kolkata to Delhi >>> British power at its peak ... out of no where came this ..... captured the imagination of the whole country ... football became an expression of dissent.

We should understand the great determination that team showed ... lets be inspired by that and try to imbibe that in our life !

and celebrate the first victory of independence movement !!

Nothing is impossible
