South Pointers for cyclone relief in Sundarbans
Monday, May 25, 2009 was witness to the devastating effects of Aila, a cyclone which gathering strength by the minute with a speed of more than 120 k.m. per hour lashed our State. Kolkata and large parts of West Bengal reeled under its impact and felt its fury.
The magnitude of the destruction however, was much more than what met the eyes. The cyclone ripped through the mangrove forests of the Sunderbans completely inundating about 13 blocks of the South 24-Parganas leaving its inhabitants homeless – an easy prey to the wrath of Nature. The river swelled and rose to about 20 ft. , broke embankments, moved inland and swept away hutments, saline water filled up the ponds and completely submerged the existing flora and fauna, destroying productivity of agricultural land. About 53,00,000 people have been affected across West Bengal with no food, shelter or any access to drinking water. They are in dire need of relief and rehabilitation.
South Point as an institution has decided to make its own humble efforts to help alleviate their suffering. A collection drive is being launched through pupils, guardians, teachers and members of staff. The amount collected will be utilised to offer relief and reconstruction materials, including food, water, medical supplies, clothes etc. directly to the affected people, utilizing services of NGOs operating in the Sunderbans. Some pupils and members of staff will also be involved in the relief work. ASPEXS is also getting involved in this work.
May we appeal to all alumni of South Point to add to this contribution by donating any amount for this noble cause? You may kindly deposit your contribution by cash or cheque with Mr Dean Surtee at the ASPEXS office at 16 Mandeville Gardens, Kolkata 700 019 against receipt. Please mention that your contribution is for Sundarbans relief. Pointers may also donate funds by direct transfer to ASPEXS’ Bank Account, details of which can be obtained from this page http://www.aspexs.com/aspexs/Carewing.aspx Please do send an email to donations@aspexs.com after making the direct transfer.
In case you wish to get involved in the relief work, please mention in this thread and also send an email to admin@aspexs.com stating your contact details.
